Should Canada Cozy Up to China?

We live in a very different world than we got used to for 80 years. In that period, the U.S. was dominant and “good” and China was weak and “evil”, being communist. Now we may not quite be seeing a role reversal, but it sure is different. Canada can no longer rely on its trade or security relationship with the U.S. We must not only find new markets but also reposition ourselves geopolitically. Which brings us back to China. They are the other big kid on the block. Their economic and geopolitical heft, and their need for our stuff are undeniable. They represent not only a market but an alternative source of sophisticated manufactured goods and technology, and in the geopolitical game, they give us some potential new moves.

So, what do we do? What kind of relationship do we want with China? Do we engage far more fully, economically, diplomatically, educationally, technologically and scientifically, or do we minimize our engagement, sticking to selling them Canola and other bulk resources. What does each option mean in practice and in terms of long-term consequences? We’ll explore that in this course
