Leadership is critical for Canada at this moment. It will make the difference between a solid future and one of subjugation. Mark Carney will have been PM for a year once we do this course. His policies and style are significantly different from those of Justin Trudeau. He stresses pragmatism and the economy over Trudeau’s more ideological approach and stress on social programs. Of course, Trudeau had to keep the NDP happy. Given the change in our relationship with the U.S., Carney has had to face a far greater challenge.
The question is whether Carney is meeting expectations. He has acted quickly to launch a program of infrastructure building that will help Canada achieve greater resilience and self-sufficiency. He has moved fast to start the process of diversifying our trade relationships. He has calmed the waters with Donald Trump and Danielle Smith but it’s not clear what the outcome of either of those situations will be and at what cost. He is perceived by some to have tacked towards the centre and even the centre-right, and as a result, those on the left who voted for him are questioning their decision.
