The World Has Failed on Climate Change - So
Now What?

There was optimism when the world’s countries signed the 2015 Paris climate change agreement, intended to limit the increase in temperature to 2 degree C, and to make all efforts to keep it at 1.5. We are certainly not going to meet the 1.5-degree target as we are more or less there already, and emissions of greenhouse gases are actually higher now than in 2015. And we are very unlikely to meet the 2-degree target either. We are actually on track for far worse than that. This will likely be catastrophic for people who are alive after 2050, but we are already seeing the extreme weather effects of climate change. So, the world has failed and is continuing to do so.
The question is why, what will it mean and what do we individually and collectively do about it? Trump would have us ignore it and double down on activities that will make climate change worse sooner. In the context of failure to date and Trump, what does the rest of the world do, not only at a national level but sub-nationally, locally and individually? Can we remove the blockages to meaningful action on climate change? Do we just have to adapt? How do we protect the most vulnerable? Are communities going to have to become far more resilient? Are we going to have to adopt radical ideas like “geoengineering”? What are the reasons for hope? We’ll explore these questions to give us a sense of what the worsening climate change situation will mean
