Canada is in an era-defining moment. Our security is no longer assured by our southern neighbour. In fact, they are a threat. Our Arctic is unprotected and Russia, as well as the U.S., have designs on it.

We have (been forced to) recognize that we need to increase our defence capability significantly, and even ramp defence spending up to 5% of GDP. This is a massive increase from our present 1.3%

Over and above the need for large increases in gear, we need more people, a lot more, in our armed forces. Why not accomplish this through compulsory national service, the main option of which being military conscription? Many of our fellow advanced democracies have this, including Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria and more.

Is this right for us? Some believe it runs counter to our identity and values. Others see it as one good way to increase defence spending and that it would be beneficial for young people. What do you think?
