You think revolutions are a thing of the distant past? Not so fast. What about Iran in 1979, the People Power revolution in the Philippines in 1986, the overthrow of communism in 1989-90, South Africa in 1994, Argentina in 2001, Georgia in 2003, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt in 2011, Ukraine in 2014 (before the actual war) and many other smaller uprisings over the last 20 years? But it can’t happen here you say?
Actually, violent or at least political revolution is more likely now in the West than at any time since the 1930s. Poverty, falling living standards, and no jobs for the young; inequality and rigged political systems; a few dozen corporations calling the shots everywhere; bankers being bailed out and then making more money than ever; and political leaders unwilling to make meaningful change.
All this creates a rich stew for violent uprising or at least a political revolution such as that being proposed by Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in the U.S., Jeremy Corbyn in the U.K. & several others in Europe. This is not just about changing the red team for the blue team (or vice versa), but overturning the entire system and creating a new order.
In this course we will explore the nature of revolution and go on to consider whether, when and where it will happen next, why it is quite possible in the West, and what it will look like. Viva La RevoluciÓn!
