The Trump World Order - It's Going to
Affect Everything, Including You
Enrol using the shopping basket at the bottom of the page
We are experiencing the most significant change in world order since WWII. Every day there are new and unbelievable actions by the Trump administration that are reshaping the order. This is going to affect you and me. In our lifetimes, we’ve seen two big shifts in world order: firstly, from the bi-polar cold war order, with its two parallel systems, to the unipolar order dominated by the United States; secondly from that order to the current multi-polar and fragmented order Even within this more fluid order, “the West”, namely the advanced democracies, has continued to act in a more or less unified way. So, things seemed relatively stable. We could live our lives feeling more or less secure. That’s gone.
The current change, courtesy of Trump, is bigger than the previous shifts. The West is collapsing as a unified concept because the U.S. has signalled that it is out. Trump seems to have a greater affinity with the authoritarians than with Western democracies. In his order it’s all about what is most advantageous to the U.S. whatever the consequences elsewhere. Trump is ignoring, even demonizing, multilateral rules and institutions. He is killing the “Rules-Based International Order” and the free-trade era of the last several decades. He sees this order as having been detrimental to the U.S. More than that, he is encouraging a “might is right” order where raw power trumps everything else, exactly what the world has attempted to prevent since 1945. We cannot rely on the U.S. Europe is trying to figure out what to do. Canada is going to have to make major adjustments. What will it all mean?
In this course, we’ll explore what new order is likely to emerge as a result of Trump and what that order will mean to countries and people around the world. Where will Canada be in all of this? How is his going to affect you, your kids and your grandkids? How can we adapt?
