The End Game in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine grinds on. Russia is making small gains, but Ukraine is resisting and with recently provided weapons may be able to take back some territory. In fact Ukraine has just made an incursion directly into Russia. However, pushing Russia out of Ukraine entirely does not look likely, especially Crimea, which Putin may even use nuclear weapons to retain.
So, how does this all end. Of course, it will end as all wars do, but on what terms, and with what sacrifices. This largely a proxy war between Russia (and in the background, China) and the West. The stakes are high. Even if Russia does not proceed to immediately threaten other countries, a victory by it in Ukraine would seriously damage what the West stands for. The question is how far the West is prepared to go to prevent a Russian victory. The other question is how far Russia is prepared to go to win. Most worryingly, could this war explode way beyond Ukraine?
Can Russia gradually be weakened sufficiently for them to be forced to retreat? Can the West support Ukraine indefinitely? Would a Trump presidency result in Western capitulation? The situation now seems irresolvable. What could change the game sufficiently to lead to a resolution? What will this war mean in the long run?
