A Blueprint For Easing Global Inequality
Thomas Piketty, the transformational economic author, shows that the march to equality is irrepressible. However, significant movement in the right direction, he says, has always required wars, pandemics, revolutions, economic depressions and/or political movements of great scope, all are forces stronger than those protecting great inequality of wealth.
The lesson from history is that when the political system is rigged in favour of inequality, at some point there will be a reaction. As a result Piketty treats the current system of hyper-capitalism as obviously doomed. It was the chaos of war, Piketty writes, that reduced inequality in the 20th century … not harmonious democratic or economic rationality, that erased the past and enabled society to begin anew with a clean slate.
We’ll discuss some of Piketty’s blueprint proposals for a civic mobilization, against inequality like:

- public financing of elections, everywhere;
- transnational coalitions to ensure common global labour laws and taxes;
- global treaties to achieve key goals such as reducing greenhouse gases and easing economic inequality between the Global North and South;
- providing a “minimum inheritance for all” of roughly $180,000 for everybody when they turn 25 years old.
