This course explores this increasingly important, yet largely unknown region of the world. Come away with insight as to what all this means.
Course Description:
- Central Asia or “the Stans” – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, formerly part of the Soviet Union, are amongst the most critical geopolitical regions in the world. They sit astride key trade routes linking Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East. The region is an ethnic cauldron, prone to instability and conflicts, a mess of historical cultural influences, tribal and clan loyalties, and religious fervour.
- Projecting influence into the area is no longer just Russia, but also Turkey, Iran, China, Pakistan, India and the United States. The Region has massive resources that every major power wants to control. It is seen as pivotal to global security, both because of its location, its weak governments and its largely Muslim population.
- In this course we will explore the Stans from several perspectives: geopolitical, cultural, economic and security. We will look at the five countries individually and the group collectively to reach conclusions about the significance of the Region and its likely future effect on the world.
- Advance reading materials will be provided along with in-class course materials
