5th state of the world conference -
a better world is possible
2016 is probably going to go down as nasty – the unending slaughter in Syria, migrants dying on the seas, horrific terrorist acts in France and the elsewhere, police shootings and the violent reaction to them in the U.S., Brexit upsetting the EU applecart and the world being forced to face up the reality of climate change. And then there’s Donald Trump.
It’s easy to bemoan the world’s many problems. However, in our 2017 Conference we want to switch gears and focus on solutions. Millions of people around the world, in governments, NGOs, other civil society organizations and as individuals are working for positive change. New ideas are emerging. Young and older people are making big change. Think of Pope Francis (who knew?), Naomi Klein, Edward Snowden and Malala, as well as many less well-known brilliant people. Investment in Green energy is far surpassing that in fossil fuels. A million refugees are being integrated in Germany. Global tax evasion is being seriously attacked for the first time. Social enterprises are solving problems on the ground everywhere. These are just a few examples.
In the Conference we will take the world’s big issues and look at how new ideas and solutions are being developed and implemented. We will look at what the world’s best global thinkers and doers are saying and doing to identify and implement positive change.
The agenda will include climate change, global finance, human security, technological change, migration and more, but all with a positive slant. Join us to see the possibilities for a better world
As usual we will provide advance readings from a wide variety of sources and class notes.
Dates: June 13-15, 2017
