From The World to Toronto and Back
June 19-21, 2018, Emmanuel college, toronto
Conference is full but if you would like to go onto the waiting list please send us an e-mail at [email protected]
Unfortunately, the world in 2018 will probably be as troubled as in 2017, and that’s before stuff we don’t even know about now. There are so many issues, some right in our faces, others further off in the future: A troubled United States, a global power shift, another potential financial crash, almost weekly and escalating cyberattacks, accelerating climate change, a demographic explosion in Africa, refugees in greater numbers than ever, the growing impact of artificial intelligence on our lives, and more.
It would be easy to pick a few of these issues for discussion. But this year we are going to focus not just on the big issues in the world, but how they affect Canada, Ontario and Toronto now and into the future. We live in a privileged bubble. Is this sustainable? Should it be? How will our society adapt? Are we sufficiently resilient to deal with shocks? Looking through the other end of the telescope, how will we in Toronto, Ontario and Canada affect the rest of the world? Are we inconsequential or can we make a difference? If so where and how? We will look at questions such as:

We will look at questions such as:
- Are we preparing adequately for climate change?
- Is our financial system as safe as we think?
- Are we really leaders in artificial intelligence?
- How is the chaotic situation in the U.S. going to affect us?
- Can we succeed in a world where the United States and Europe are not the leaders?
- Are we as a society prepared for the coming avalanche of cyberattacks?
- Should we be accepting many more refugees? Could we handle it?
