Course full. To go onto waiting list, please e-mail us at [email protected]
With climate change accelerating, the Arctic is becoming geopolitically more important than ever. The region holds vast energy resources. It’s newly available shipping are of immense commercial and military significance. The major countries around the Arctic are entering a phase of increased competition for control over the region. Russia holds the whip hand having recognized the importance of the Arctic decades ago. Of course having a Gulag helps. Even China is entering the fray, even though their most northerly border is thousands of kilometres from the Arctic Circle. Canada should be a big player here, but can we be? What’s at stake in this scramble for Arctic territory and resources? Who is likely to win and what would that mean for the world? How will climate change influence what happens? What can the global community do to control this potentially dangerous competition and also prevent the environmental catastrophe that will result from Arctic development?
