By now most of us have heard of “Bitcoin”, the most well known digital currency, and maybe a few of us have used it. But the impact of digital currencies (or “cryptocurrencies” as they known because of the encryption that enables them) goes way beyond the idea of a currency that is created without the involvement of governments. Digital currencies have the potential to create a new global financial system outside of the existing banking system.
On the other hand, some see the banks themselves as taking advantage of the technology to cut their costs & provide new services. Either way it will be a game changer for everyone, & soon. The benefit & risks are still emerging.
