Brexit - The End Game

For the last two years, the U.K. has been faced with how to extricate itself from the European Union after having voted by referendum to get out.
The issue has split the country. Some see it as a disaster for the British economy and a retreat from liberal democratic values, including the free movement of people. Others see it as an opportunity to free Britain from the shackles of EU regulation and to pursue a strategy that links the country to the rising powers in the East rather than to a declining Europe. They particularly want to end unchecked immigration.
We are now entering the end game in negotiations, which have been difficult, even acrimonious. In side the UK the politics around this are fraught. Lifelong alliances are being broken and unlikely new alliances being formed. What happens in the next couple of months will have huge ramifications for Britain, the EU and the global trading and financial systems. It could lead to a fall of the UK government. It could even lead to the disintegration of the UK. Will it push the world into further economic disintegration and illiberal values? Is it further evidence of the collapse of the liberal democratic order? Or is it just the Brits being the Brits, dreaming of recreating empire? Do we as Canadians really care? Will it affect us either way?
In this pop-up course we’ll explore the real issues and agendas at play and the possible outcomes. You’ll walk away understanding the stakes, the players, the positions and be able to follow the story as it plays out.
