The rise of the broad middle class in the west was largely a story of incomes converging across regions to the point that people commonly & appropriately spoke of a single standard of living. It seemed consistent with the well-established direction of both the economy & government.
Government at all levels pursued policies preserving local control of businesses & checking monopolization. Yet starting in the early 1980s, the long trend toward regional equality abruptly switched. Policy levers were flipped, one after the other, in the opposite direction, in the guise of “deregulation.”
Why do we support government deregulation & the opening up of domestic markets to foreign competition, resulting in severe inequality in standards of living? How did we come to believe in a smaller role for the state, achieved through privatization & limits on the ability of governments to run fiscal deficits & accumulate debt? Find out how people are pushing back on governments to establish & defend humane standards of living.
