Re-imagining Capitalism – Business As Usual Is Over.... but what comes next?

Yes, we had a global meltdown of capitalism in 2008, but all is now OK, right? If you believe this you probably read the Economist (get a life) and you would be wrong. In fact the ground is shifting under the feet of capitalism. The system is on the defensive and change is coming. Not in the future, it’s happening now. When McKinsey & Co, the high priests of capitalism, acknowledge that capitalism must reform then you know time is up.
So what will the change be all about? The key is that shareholder and financial capitalism, the version that has predominated for the last 25 years, is completely removed from the society that supports it, not to mention the environment. This is unsustainable. You can only ignore other interests for so long. What is happening is that progressive forces are challenging the system, not only from without but, most critically, from within. McKinsey is one example. Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, one of the world’s largest companies, states “Those companies that fail to see that business has a larger social purpose and value than making money will struggle to survive”.
In this course we will explore how governments, civil society and most importantly, corporations, are designing new laws, rules, norms and structures that are changing the way capitalism operates. It’s early days, but the shift is unmistakable.
