What Will Change forever in the Corona World?
It's now Corona's world. We just live in it - if we're lucky. This course is not about the post Corona world because it’s becoming evident that we will likely have to live with the Coronavirus indefinitely, hopefully while keeping it under control. But that control may imply serious changes to the way the world works. The impact of the Corona virus is mostly negative: it kills people, is costly, limits freedom to do things we enjoy, and creates a general sense of insecurity. However, the virus has exposed a number of issues previously swept under the rug, such as the situation in long-term care homes, gross inequalities and how people who make our world work are under-appreciated and under-paid. Maybe, we’ll finally address these issues and others requiring reform. It's also shown that governments can create huge fiscal deficits and not worry too much about that. So, the money can be found to fix problems.
Another aspect of Covid-19 is that it has created some big winners amongst all the losers. Obviously, Amazon and some other tech companies, but there will also be geopolitical winners (and losers), and even ideological winners and losers. Will Corona lead to a strengthening of the left or the right? will it strengthen or weaken democracy? In this course we’ll look at the longer-term impact of Covid-19 in a number of spheres: the domestic and global economy, public and private finances, domestic politics, geopolitics, the impact on various industries and the impact on lifestyles. Some likely questions: How will governments handle their debt? Will a universal basic income be introduced? Will political leaders use Covid to override freedoms we now have? Will we ever travel like we used to? Overall, will life in the future look more or less like it did before, or are we in for major and permanent change?
