Cuba - What's the Real Story?
To enrol, please go to the bottom of this page
Cuba is a dictatorship in which peoples’ human rights are severely limited. It’s essentially a prison that everyone wants to leave but can’t. People are desperately poor. That’s a pretty standard story about Cuba from many quarters. There is another story: The UN’s Human Development Index places Cuba as a high development country. Its per capita income is a little higher than that of Mexico or Argentina. Its literacy rate is amongst the highest and its health system is considered to be highly effective. Life expectancy is slightly higher than in the U.S. So, what’s the real story? Is Cuba a terrible place in which to live or actually a pretty decent place, just with a very different system from ours?
In this course we’ll take a hard, multi-dimensional look at Cuba using reliable and unbiased sources. We’ll explore how Cuba’s political system actually works, what its economy looks like and how people manage with far fewer material goods. We’ll also analyse Cuba’s geopolitical significance and its relations with other countries and try to understand why the country is such a target for U.S. disapproval and harsh sanctions. Come away with an understanding of the realities of this unusual country.
