- Earlier this year Jane Mayer’s seminal book “Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right” was published. It has been a best seller. The story of Dark Money is multi-faceted, but the overarching theme is how a group of ultra-rich right wing ideologues have attempted to shape the United States (and by extension other liberal democracies), according to their world view.
This is a world view whereby government is radically shrunk back, taxes for the ultra rich eliminated, regulation wiped out and the less fortunate left to fend for themselves with virtually no support, while the power of the ultra rich becomes supreme. The tools are varied, from using tax-exempt foundations to funding of think tanks and radical-right cells of writers and educators; owning media; placing people with their ideology in as many institutions as possible; and of course political campaign financing. There is more - much more.
The overall picture is of a society being taken over by a powerful few – at least that’s been the goal. In this course we will explore what has happened, how successful it has been and what is being done to stop it. Today, in the fall of 2016, have we passed a point of no return, with effectively two Republicans (we see the real you Hillary) running for the President of the United States? Or are we in the process of turning it back? Join us to find out
