Deja-vu All Over Again

Freedom comes at a cost. Today we are grappling with quality of public life, equality, & the workings of democracy. History can help prod today’s debate. A hidden gem in English history, the Putney Debates,is a good basis for the repair of our politics & economics. The largest group involved in those debates, the Levellers, crafted arguments for equality & constitutional democracy, framed as the “Agreements of the People.”

The Levellers’ agreements deserve to be re-examined as a starting point for processing the many changes percolating through todays international political-economics. Remarkably, ordinary men (& in some cases, women) were allowed the chance to express their views on what a new, less unequal political system might look like. Could we benefit from their approach?

Discussion Question: How do we today overcome those who want to prevent meaningful change?
