Dodging extinction: energy, food, money, & the future of life on earth
There are those who believe the world is headed for disaster, not necessarily now, but some time in the
foreseeable future, maybe in the lives of our grandchildren. The causes cited are obviously cimate change, rise of fundamentalism, increasing problems with energy generation, poverty, inequality, & an economic system that does not seem to work for most people. However, it does not have to happen.
Pulling back from the brink of disaster will not be easy, it is a very, very, big task. But past
experience shows that solving problems on this gigantic scale requires that a few things come
together.
Such successful global-through-local cooperation resulted in ending WWII and the
rebuilding afterwards; banning use of nuclear weapons; dramatically increasing global
food production with the Green Revolution; & reversing stratospheric ozone depletion.

Pulling back from the brink of disaster will not be easy, it is a very, very, big task. But past
experience shows that solving problems on this gigantic scale requires that a few things come
together.
- The first is simply recognizing that a global problem exists & that not fixing it will be a bad thing for humanity.
- The second is understanding that fixing global problems requires win-win interactions between local communities - where changes take place through local people’s efforts – and governments, which have to define priorities and back them with clear incentives.
- And cooperation across local, state, and national boundaries is essential, since solving global problems ultimately requires global vision.
