Grand Strategies - The Battle for Power and Influence
Does the United States have a “grand strategy” for dealing with the rise of China? What’s China’s grand strategy to match or overtake the U.S.? “Grand strategy” is long-term strategy pursued at the highest levels by a nation to further its interests. It’s applied mainly to nations but can also apply to corporations and other institutions. For example, in a Canadian context, Nortel and Blackberry are examples of grand strategic failure. Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple all have grand strategies. Not all will succeed. Historically, Bismarck was a successful grand strategist. Napoleon was ultimately a failed grand strategist. The question is “why”? What did these leaders get right and wrong?
In this course we’ll analyze what grand strategy is all about. What makes a grand strategy as opposed to just a strategy? What makes a grand strategy a success or a failure? We’ll look at a number of historical and current case studies, including the U.S., China, the U.K., Singapore, Israel and India. Historically we’ll consider World War II grand strategies of the axis and allied powers. In a business context, we’ll analyze the Nortel and Blackberry failures. We’ll compare the grand strategies of the big tech companies and decide who will survive.
