India - The Pivotal Country of the 21st Century
Online course. Enrol at the bottom of this page
This is India’s time. After decades of underperformance and limited global relevance, India is now positioned to have a huge influence on the world in coming decades. Its influence is already being felt on many fronts – economically, environmentally, geopolitically and demographically. It is now the world’s most populous country and its population is young. It is the pivotal “swing” country in the geopolitics of the 21st century.
The country is experiencing a sustained economic boom, shedding its reputation as the home of “the Hindu rate of growth”. All this sounds fine, but there are flies in the ointment. Prime Minister Modi is seen by some as transforming India from a diverse democracy into a Hindu nationalist autocracy. India has to navigate its fraught relationship with China, the economic superpower which has traditionally been not just a competitor, but at times an enemy. India is also a climate change “bad actor”. This will have consequences.
In this course we will explore India in a multi-faceted way, identifying the ways in which India is evolving internally and how it will affect the world at large. We’ll take a side trip to look at the India-Canada relationship.
