The Japanese Model: Piketty Applied
Japan is unique. Since the early 1990s they have had 20 years of almost no economic growth. How have the Japanese retained their high quality of life? How has this occurred with an ageing society? Does the Japanese culture itself explain their success?
How did society adapt? Have ideas currently being espoused by Thomas Piketty in his ground-breaking book, “Capital in the 21st Century”, been a part of the answer? Specifically how did Japan achieve greater equality than western countries? Low unemployment? Excellent health & the world’s longest life spans? In this course we'll discuss the class reactions to all aspects of the Japanese model: its economy, politics, social programs & culture. Come away with an understanding of this admirable society & what they can teach us.
