Jordan's Principle: Why is Canada Still Denying First Nation Children?
Jordan's Principle is a legal requirement resulting from the Orders of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT). It is a child-first principle aimed at eliminating service inequities and delays for First Nations children”. First Nations treaties are far from perfect, but they have legal status and years of Supreme Court decisions offering a degree of certainty. But given the history of broken promises and paternalistic policies, no one can blame First Nations for having doubts about their ability to gain autonomous control of their child services.
• Why are the rights to self-determination of First Nations denied, suppressed or ignored?
• How are First Nations using agreements and legislation to improve their social programs and economies through greater fiscal independence?
• When will public opinion demand government action on outstanding legislation?
• Who benefits from preventing change?
• If Modern Monetary Theory shows Canada can afford to give First Nations autonomy, why doesn’t it happen?
