the value of everything: making and taking in the global economy

Economic value is decided by accountants. Activities are deemed to be value creating simply because someone, usually someone with vested interest, says so. Highly unproductive (even counter-productive) economic actors behave as if the private sector creates all value & wealth on which the government feeds like parasites. But in fact the reverse is often true. for example, who decides that a care worker is less valuable than a banker? Foggy notions of value create confusion between earned and unearned profits, and between extractors & creators of wealth. This distorts the measurements of growth & GDP. In the process, innovation suffers & inequality rises.
We will discuss the stories we are being told about who are value creators in modern-day capitalism, stories about which activities are productive as opposed to unproductive & where value creation comes from. We may need to rethink the role of public policy & the importance of the public sector, & redefine how we measure value in our society. We will focus on Mariana Mazzucato's book 'The Value of Everything' & discuss some of the challenging issues that are raised.
