How Migration is Changing Our World

The recent exodus from Syria & other countries in Asia & Africa may seem like a unique situation but it almost certainly isn’t. War, economic deprivation, autocratic governments & climate change will all create wave after wave of migration for the foreseeable future.
This is the new normal, as masses of young, mobile people and their families decide not to accept living in hell. The U.S. is facing the same kind of migration of Mexicans and Central Americans. The number of people forcibly displaced at the end of 2014 had risen to a staggering 59.5 million compared to 51.2 million a year earlier and 37.5 million a decade ago.
Globally, one in every 122 humans is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum. If this were the population of a country, it would be the world's 24th biggest.
So what are Western countries doing about it? Putting up walls & fences does not work. Other policies are required, including a massive effort to transform the lot of people living in the developing world. In this course we will explore the options for the West & the political, economic & social implications of each.
