Moderator College

Our Moderator College is a course for retired volunteers who would like to gain confidence being  moderators of participatory courses for fellow retirees, to help meet the need for high-quality moderators for university-level courses for retirees and for personal growth! 

This concept was piloted by John Simke C.A. and Pat Simke MBA at the LIFE Institute, Ryerson University, 2009 to 2013, training moderators to lead World Studies and Life Skills courses.

Course Description:
Training program participants will observe experienced discussion class moderators lead classes of a maximum of 35 students. They will participate in seminars on how to:
  • manage these discussion courses;
  • prepare Course Packs and recommended reading/videos in courses;
  • use prepared Class Notes effectively;
  • update research materials.

The College will provide to the course participants:
  • access to a library of courses;
  • researched course content in Course Packs or booklets;
  • prepared Class Notes;
  • a Moderator’s Manual;
  • a Course Development Manual;\
  • tools to prepare class biography brochures, evaluations, tent cards
  • training in technology tools that support successful moderation 

Dates: July 8 to 10, 2014

Location: Queen's Landing Hotel, Niagara-on-the-Lake


Cost: Group Rates include 2 hotel nights, 2 Shaw Festival theatre tickets, all meals,Business and materials. 

Single occupancy $1,080 
Double occupancy $820 per person

Business Case: The cost of training/equipping one moderator would be more than recovered by revenues from one course with 25 participants paying $50 each, a total of (25 X 50 = 1,250).
