Monopoly - it's not a game anymore
Did you ever want to slap your little brother for gloating as he won at Monopoly, with all the properties and hotels? Well you should have…hard. Because he has grown into a real monopolist. He and others like him have created dominant positions in several industries. Think banking, pharmaceuticals, technology, telephone and internet services, media and retail. Many sectors of our economy are more dominated by a few large players than ever. Even sports and entertainment are effective monopolies. Monopolists extract money from you, me and everyone else. Your banking fees, internet charges, drugs, sports tickets and more are far too expensive. Ticketmaster even rips you off by scalping its own tickets.
So what can be done about it? Should governments break up these cozy clubs? Should they be far more heavily regulated? Should it be made easier for small competitors to enter these markets. Or is there really no problem at all – markets will look after it in time?
We’ll get into these issues in depth, exploring what is being done here (very little) and in other countries to deal with increasing monopoly power, including specific case studies. It’s not the principle, it’s the money of the thing!
