Sustainable Lives for 9 Billion
COURSE FULL. YOU CAN E-MAIL US AT [email protected] TO JOIN THE WAITING LIST
Today the world’s population is 7.3 billion. Many do not have reliable access to the essentials of life - food water, security, shelter. Large-scale “informal” migration on a daily basis is evidence of this. It speaks to an out-of-balance world in which large numbers of people have virtually nothing while we hugely over-consume in the West. Yet within the next 35 years, the population will increase 30%, almost all in the poorest & most insecure countries of the world.
What kinds of demands will this huge increase in people, and in consumption place on the earth’s natural and economic systems? How will people be fed? How’ll we reduce desperate migration by creating sustainable life everywhere?
In this course we will examine some of the most successful initiatives in sustainable development, such as agro-ecology. We’ll look at the Sustainable Development Goals currently being developed by the UN to replace the mostly successful Millennial Development Goal program launched 15 years ago. We’ll look at ways in which different societies are learning to cooperate and build tolerance between each other. There are ways a 9+ Billion planet can work.
