People - Enough Already?
The world now has a population of over 8 billion. Worry about over-population has been going on for centuries. Finite resources have been trotted out as the reason that we can’t have an unlimited number of people. Yet, it’s always been proven to be a misplaced concern. Who would have dreamt in 1950 that by 2020 the world’s population would have trebled, but that global poverty would be lower? Now there is a little fly in the ointment called climate change. Yes, resource constraints are still a concern but climate change is now being touted as the reason that we have too many people. There is no denying that every human is responsible for some GHG emissions, but the reality is that it’s only a sliver of humanity that accounts for the vast bulk of emissions.
In this course we’ll explore the population issue from various perspectives. Not only climate change and resources but also biodiversity loss, health and security.

- Is overpopulation really the problem, or the behaviour of the richer world?
- Or is new tech reducing the emissions per capita so the number of people is largely irrelevant.

- What size of population is sustainable?
- If we do have to worry about population what, if anything can we do about it?
