Throughout history, depopulation was the product of catastrophe: ice ages, plagues, the collapse of civilizations. This time, however, it’s argued that we're thinning ourselves deliberately, by choosing to have fewer babies than we need to replace ourselves. In much of the developed & developing world, that decline is already underway with some attributing it to urbanization, women's empowerment & waning religiosity leading to smaller & smaller families. To grow old in a society where more people are young is fundamentally different to doing so in a society where more people are in older age groups.
