Populism: Friend or Foe?
COURSE FULL. PLEASE E-MAIL US AT LEARNINGEXPERIENCES@BELL.NET TO JOIN THE WAITING LIST
Populism is a political approach that relies on a charismatic leader going over the heads of established institutions to disenchanted masses, mobilizing them with often simplistic promises of fundamental change. Peron in Argentina, Preston Manning in Canada, Berlusconi in Italy, the Tea Party in the U.S., Hugo Chavez in Venezuela & Evo Morales in Bolivia are historical & current examples.
Populism generally feeds on bad times and/or deep dissatisfaction with ruling elites. It is often portrayed as dangerous, possibly leading to autocracy or economic disaster. However, populism can also be a way of getting rid of corrupt & out of touch governments.
