l"Peace in our time” from Munich. Sound familiar? The latest Syrian ceasefire, agreed on February 12 in Munich will at best provide a pause in the war. At worst it will allow Assad to consolidate his position. The Syrian civil war is now five years old and shows no signs of ending, despite furious diplomatic efforts by the U.S. and EU. Wars like this end when the parties, both those directly involved and those behind them, decide that it’s time. Why has this not yet occurred despite 500,000 casualties and displacement of millions? Why are those fighting so committed? Why are Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran so intent on pushing for their desired outcome, despite the massive cost for countries that already have financial problems? Why is the U.S. so tentative in its efforts to end the war despite the fact that it is providing a great opportunity for ISIS to expand its territory and influence? Why is a relatively small and insignificant country so geopolitically important? Why does “peace in our time” from Munich sound a little “off”. What are potential end-game scenarios and how might these be achieved? Join us to discuss this and more.
