The recent publication of Thomas Picketty’s book has shaken the economics profession and how the world sees inequality. Previously inequality was seen as a regrettable but temporary phenomenon. Picketty’s analysis of data over 200 years shows that inequality is the natural outcome of capitalism and is likely to get worse. His key point is that the return on capital or wealth is consistently higher than the rate of growth of the economy. The result is that the wealthy get richer and richer. Picketty goes on to propose measures that would break this cycle. In this course we will review Picketty’s analysis and thinking. You will come away with an understanding of Picketty, inequality and how we can deal with this serious issue.
