What is Toronto’s Future - Renewal or Decline?
This course is sold out. You can go on the waiting list by sending us an e-mail here.
Things are not looking great for Toronto right now. We all know this. A massive budget hole, a cost of living crisis for many, unaffordable and unavailable housing, an inadequate transit system, a hollowed-out downtown, random violent crime and overlaid on this, growing income inequality, a Provincial government that holds seems hostile to Toronto and of course, the growing impact of climate change
At least we now have a mayor who is a break from the penny-pinching, no-change, business-worshiping years of John Tory and the chaos of Rob Ford. The challenges are huge but Olivia Chow brings fresh energy and a fresh perspective. On the plus side, Toronto is still ranked as one of the best places to live in the world, but there are clearly cracks that make this assessment fragile.
In this course we will examine the most important issues facing Toronto and the policy alternatives. We’ll come away with a better understanding of what the current situation is and what can be done to prevent Toronto from declining further. We’ll try and answer the basic question: Is Toronto going to renew itself or are we going to have to accept continued decline?
Moderator: John Simke
Dates: Fridays October 6 and 13, 2-4PM
Location: Victoria College, University of Toronto, 91 Charles Street West Room 211
Cost: $30
