The Great British Freefall
Online course

Despite its many faults, such as the small matters of colonialism and slavery, most of us have some admiration, even affection, for Britain. It is the fount of our language and much of our culture. London is arguably still the world’s greatest city. Much of the countryside is gorgeous. But lots is wrong. The country has been led by liars and incompetents (worse than the usual ones) for over a decade. Johnson is only the most recent example and his likely successor is worse. Brexit is turning into a disaster. Inequality is deeply entrenched between classes and regions. They badly messed up their Covid response. The cost of living is out of control, in particular exploding energy prices, pushing millions into fuel poverty. Economic growth has stalled. The health service is collapsing. The government is frozen in inaction. Scotland is likely to leave. Wales is considering it, and Northern Ireland will almost certainly unite with the Republic at some point. The United Kingdom is unravelling. In 10 years it will be smaller than it is now.

Is this, as Monty Python might have said: “just a flesh wound”? Or are we witnessing serious decline? We’ll take a hard look at the UK from various perspectives – political, economic, social and environmental and determine whether the “Sceptred Isle” can bounce back. We’ll also consider the global implications.
