- While some claim the underground economy should be outlawed, others increasingly realize that it is the only truly entrepreneurial arena left, where individuals can do business apart from the corporate-controlled supply chains.
- The reality is that an underground economy is better than no economy and that people making a living contribute to society in many ways without paying taxes.
One of Trump’s clear policies is to deregulate as much as possible. What this will accelerate is the growth of the so-called “underground economy”, or people making a living outside of the formal economic systems. Typically, this kind of economic activity has been demonized.
However, to many it represents freedom – the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing economy and customer needs. In fact, the internet is enabling all kinds of informal small businesses. What Trump may do is bring the underground above ground with policies that help small, informal enterprises grow into larger creators of jobs and opportunity.
Too optimistic? Maybe not. Change is in the air, and the old formal economic structures are giving way to a whole different economy
We will explore whether the underground economy is here to stay and should, in fact be encouraged. Should politicians, economists (and we) get out of our mental mind-lock and see the underground economy as beneficial? What will the "Trump Effect" be?
