The way people make a living has undergone radical change in the last 30 years, and even more change is coming. Stable, secure, long-term jobs that provide a middle class living are increasingly rare. Precarious work, the so-called “gig” economy, is now taking over.
A few are doing extraordinarily well. Most are not. Unions are a shadow of their former selves. Are these trends going to continue? Will we see increasing insecurity and the inability of many to buy a home & save for retirement? Or are we in a transition towards far more flexible work, with people able to call their own shots based on their particular skills?
The sharing economy (Uber, AirbNb) is opening up new opportunities. Will people thrive in this environment? What about those who can’t? What government policies are needed to help transition people to this new work reality? What about the increasing likelihood that technology will make a lot of work obsolete? What would that mean?
This course will address all these questions to help us understand what the new world of work will mean economically, socially and politically. This is what your kids & grandkids will face, far beyond what they are experiencing today.
